20 for 2005 (#15): Xiu Xiu - La For?™t
After 2004's near-perfect Fabulous Muscles, I thought Xiu Xiu had regressed a bit after hearing La For?™t the first few times. That's probably because my favorite Xiu Xiu songs have been the loudest ones, and La For?™t has a quieter intensity to it. Where earlier Xiu Xiu had more teenage angst-y songs, La For?™t seems to be more about the quiet resignation of accepting stuff that happens. There's a lot of quiet on here. In fact after really letting this record sink in, I really started to appreciate a lot more of Jamie Stewart's earlier stuff that I hadn't given much play to because I was always skipping past them to get to "Apistat Commander" or "I Broke Up". Also Xiu Xiu was the best live show I saw this year. If they come through your town, don't miss it.
