20 for 2005 (#17): The Decemberists - Picaresque
What excited me most about Picaresque was that as the reviews started coming in, you saw fewer comparisons to Neutral Milk Hotel than with Colin Meloy's previous records. I thought it was a lazy reference that never really did The Decemberists justice. Picaresque features a stunning number of strong songs about love, the plague, the ocean, circuses and death. Really he's just reping the mean streets of Montana. Oh and there is a really powerful anti-war song (16 Military Wives) which could either be about the War of 1812 or that Iraq thing. I never knew pirates could be so literary.
