Also Happy Rappers I Know Month

Perhaps much more interesting than Blog Day is fwmj's Rappers I Know Month. I'm enjoying the cover art as much as the music.

Happy Blog Day 2005 or whatever

Did you know that today is Blog Day? Me neither. But after seeing feed after feed point me to new sites today because of it, I thought I'd spread the nerdiness. On Blog Day you point out five blogs that you find interesting. Easy enough, right? Here are five all alphebetized and such:

1. Alan's Mojave Airport Weblog - Photos of stuff that goes on out at the Mojave Airport. I've loved airplanes since I was a kid, so the unusual goings on at Mojave are fascinating to me.

2. Finding DMo - This is the blog of David Morrissey, who sits across the cubicle wall from me for two more weeks until he moves to Brooklyn. He has a nice radio show on Friday mornings here in Salt Lake, and he is a fine writer. He is a jerk for escaping this direct marketing hell before me.

3. Make - This magazine (and blog) seems like it was written just for me.

4. Paul Allen - Not the Microsoft one, the Utah one. He is one of the state's best entrepeneurs, and I learn something from each of his posts.

5. TechCrunch - A highly entertaining resource for all the lastest Web 2.0-type startups and product launches.

Great obit on the Apple iPod by HP

Ross Rubin writes this hilariously painful commentary on the death of the HP / Apple iPod partnership, which I could never make sense of. As ridiculous as the conversation in the article is, it probably is not that far off from what really went down.

Madlib

MadlibAs far as I know Madlib may very well make every hip hop album in the world using different ailases. Seriously, dude is prolific. His newest record was completely under my radar until I saw a little blurb about it at tiny mix tapes today. Sound Directions actually appears to be an alias of an alias (read the blurb), which makes it a little more understandable that I completely missed it. Sound Directions is a live band, and takes cues from Madlib's "Shades of Blue" project he did with Blue Note in 2003. From the two tracks available, it sounds really really hot. The full album comes out in October.

Simon Joyner

Simon JoynerThere is something about Simon Joyner's music that makes it sound slower than anyone has ever recorded before. And I mean that in a good way, kind of like a countrified Leonard Cohen.

Natural Dreamers

I don't have any real links or images or anything for this, but after sitting on my hard drive for over a year, I finally listened to Natural Dreamers today, and it's good. As best I can figure, this is a side project from members of Deerhoof and The Curtains, and it sounds pretty much like that. It also reminds me of a mellowed out Lightning Bolt.

RIAA vs The People

Finally someone who has been sued by RIAA (a single mother of five, even) has decided to stand up to their bullying tactics and not settle out of court. Recording Industry vs The People is a blog from one of her lawyers documenting the lawsuit. Good for them.

Peanut Butter Wolf

Peanut Butter WolfThis one goes out to my coworker Leo who has been going on about Peanut Butter Wolf for two days now without knowing who he is aside from his name. I admit he does have one of the greatest names in hip hop history, but everyone should know him if they are at all a fan of the genre. I think My Vinyl Weighs a Ton blows DJ Shadow's Endtroducing out of the water and is perhaps the best new school old school hip hop album ever.

I know this is very hipster crafty

But between this and Tobias Funke's skull sweater, I really want to learn how to knit right now.
