Moustache

A little vacation

DeliveranceI will be in West Virginia until Tuesday doing some white water rafting. Unless I die and get sent to some sort of hell where I am forced to blog for eternity, there will be no updates until then.

Smell ya later, jerks.

Hella

HellaI've decided that things have become too quiet and pretty this week, so here is some Hella. Word to your mother.

Kudos to you, Sub Pop

This is something every record label should do: RSS feeds for everything you could ever hope for from Sub Pop. Combine this with their generous helping of mp3s, and you have the makings of a nearly perfect record label site.

Migala

MigalaI had a pretty crappy housemate one summer who was pretty much the worst person you could ever hope to live with. He had, however, two redeeming qualities. The first was that he had an orange Tabby cat with really long hair. He shaved this cat to look like a lion, with a mane and little tufts on his feet and tail. It made me smile every time I saw him. The second was that he went to Spain for two weeks, and brought me back a Migala cd because he thought I would like it. And did I! If you are looking for some sort of indication of what kind of music they play, know this: They did a cover of Mazzy Star's Fade Into You on one of their records, and it sounds even more like the original than the original does.

If you like anything at all on the Kranky label, you will like Aarktica. Soft, gentle, and painfully beautiful, Aarktica sounds like the post-climatic parts of a Godspeed You Black Emperor! song (if GYBE! stopped hating America and fell in love with someone), but you don't miss the climax at all.

The Long Winters

The Long WintersYesterday I came across three or four different people talking about The Long Winters, which is odd since they haven't really released anything in a couple of years. But there was a time when I listened to them for about a month straight. It's good pure pop-rock similar to the New Pornographers. Car Parts is probably their best song, and will be stuck in your head for days.

If you find my mp3s boring

Try The Hype Machine. It's such a good idea that it has "A-List" MP3 bloggers up in arms about it.

Gary Higgins

Gary HigginsBefore there was Animal Collective and Devendra Banhart, there was Gary Higgins. Red Hash was recorded in 1973 before Gary started a two year stint in the slammer for drug possession. It was never formally released, and floated around underground for the next 30 years. This month Drag City released the album and while I've only heard this one song so far (which sounds like it was written by Sam Beam's father), it is definitely one to go out and find.

Currituck Co.

Aden guitarist Kevin Barker's solo project, Currituck Co. at times sounds like Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, Mark Kozelek, and the '40s NYC Folk scene. It's really good, simple songwriting. As an added bonus (although I can't tell how serious this is), you can buy instructional videos for various Currituck Co. songs. Rock.
