Spoon

I'll admit I know next to nothing about the process of recording and producing a record. All those knobs and dials and stuff might as well launch missles or make hot chocolate for all I know. That's why, when I become a super big rock star, I am going to have Britt Daniel make sure it sounds good. For my money, there is nothing so good sounding as a Spoon record. It is quiet where is should be, loud where it should be, and often both at the same time. It's awesome.

In spirit of this morning's SC ruling, I've been listening to Ted Leo. After the last presidential election, Ted Leo's Shake the Sheets was all I could listen to that helped get me out of the funk. Also, he almost has a blog going on his website, which is cool. It'd be cooler if you could easily read it against that background, but still, its good reading.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone
P.S.- I've started a beta feed that makes a podcast out of just the mp3 files. Peep it here. You should be able to add it to your podcasting software. Let me know if this actually works or not.

As I read about today's Supreme Court ruling against Grokster / StreamCast, I had a few thoughts:
1. I can't help but wonder if this even matters. The P2P cat is out of the bag, and it is not going to go away.
2. This case wasn't really about P2P anyway. It's about future innovations.
3. Will this have a similar result as Bush's Stem Cell policy? Perhaps now garage tinkerers and software developers will be less enthusiastic about 0pening shop in the U.S., and will head to more open nations to do business.
4. Does anyone else get the feeling that the entertainment industry keeps sabotoging themselves at every turn? They fought video tapes, which brought them record profits. They fought mp3s, which are making more of their back catalog available (and profitable again). They fight BitTorrent, which makes it practical to transfer large files to many people. Every step of the way, they make the exact wrong decision in order to save their current business model. And yet they are raking in the money. Unbelievable. How long until we get tired of bailing them out and come up with something better that excludes them completely?
Howard Tuttleman I heart you

So I got my cuecat barcode reader working, and am nerdily building a library of all my cds and stuff. After scanning in Pet Sounds, I found this review by a Howard Tuttleman. It's hard to imagine anyone not being able to give Pet Sounds 6 out of 5 stars, but Howard found a way. You have to respect a hater at the top of his game. I'd link to the review, but Amazon does not go for that sort of thing, so here is a link to his page or reviews. Highly entertaining. Also, dude's got a website.

When I was in high school I went to my friends house, and he had an Idaho CD. I was born there, so I felt that I had a duty to like them (this is also the same reason I was a fan of the B-52's song "Private Idaho" as a child). Luckily, they were very good. Not suprisingly, they are not actually from Idaho, but from California. But that's besides the point. They put out about 8 albums in 10 years, and I thought they had broken up, but according to their website they are wrapping up a new record, so that's cool. This mp3 is from my favorite record (Hearts of Palm) although I think most people like Levitate more. They are both excellent and highly recommended.

Sometimes I wonder what the heck is going on in Deluth MN, home of Low and their Chairkickers Music. Case in point: No Wait Wait. They are kind of like the newer poppier Low with Rick Ocasek at the dials. Dig?
